Philippine Navy Begins Training For New Corvettes

According to the Phillipine Navy, training for its personnel on the operations of its future South Korean-manufactured corvettes has begun. PN spokesperson Cmdr John Percie Alcos said that the two guided missile corvettes are presently being constructed in South Korea at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ (HHI) Ulsan shipyard.

“The first corvette will be coming in during the second semester of next year, the PN has been preparing for that already, we have been training people, we have been organizing them,” said Cmdr Alcos. Additionally, the Navy has begun acquiring ‘necessary equipment’ that will enable the crew to effectively perform their duties as soon as the new assets arrive. The crew of the first vessel with be sent to South Korea in 2025 to train with the ‘original equipment manufacturers’.

Meanwhile, the second corvette is slated for delivery in 2026. Ordered in December 2021 for USD551 million, the two 3,200 tonne corvettes will likely be equipped with anti-ship, anti-air missiles and vertical launch systems as well as other state-of-the-art equipment.-shp/adj/dl (Pix:Hyundai Heavy Industries)
