New chief takes helm of JMSDF
ADMIRAL Akira Saito has assumed the position of Chief of Staff of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), taking over from his predecessor Adm Ryo Sakai who had stepped down.
In a statement from the JMSDF, said “the JMSDF will steadily implement necessary measures, including the reinforcement of its personnel resource, in accordance with the government policy of fundamentally strengthening defence capabilities as indicated in the Three Strategic Documents, in order to adapt to a security environment that is changing at a remarkably rapid pace.
The JMSDF will continue to work on and strengthen its relationship with the U.S. Navy and the navies of like-minded countries to achieve the three goals of “Defend Japan’s territory and surrounding areas,” “Secure the safety of maritime traffic,” and “Create desirable security environment.” In these efforts, the JMSDF will also enhance its various functions and respond flexibly to the drastically changing situation with new ideas that are not tied down to conventional concepts and a sense of speed.
Amid multiple incidents that have undermined the trust of the public in a drastically changing security environment where there is no time to stand still, the JMSDF will go back to the basics that we are for the nation and its people, and that we are serving for maritime defence. We will face our mission, stand our ground with sincerity, and fulfil the responsibilities entrusted to the JMSDF. As the Chief of Staff, JMSDF, I will have “Strength” and “Sincerity” for my motto as I work together with all members of the JMSDF to protect the seas and defend the peace and independence of our country.”
