KOREA Aerospace Industries (KAI) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with aerospace giant Airbus to expand their comprehensive cooperation in the defence and aerospace sectors. The agreement was signed at the Seoul International Aerospace & Defense Exhibition (ADEX) 2025 in the presence of KAI’s acting CEO Cha Jae-byung, president of Airbus Asia-Pacific Anand Stanley and head of Airbus Korea Lee Hee-hwan.

Under the MOU, the two companies will explore a wide range of joint opportunities, including the development of special mission aircraft, high-speed medium-lift helicopters, and flight tests for aerial refuelling of the KF-21 being developed and popular FA-50 fighter jets. KAI and Airbus also plan to expand their collaboration in emerging technologies and develop new businesses.

Stanley added, “Airbus Defence & Space will work to enhance military satellite communication capabilities while also working on projects related to the A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT), and Airbus Helicopters to study alongside KAI the possibility of future collaboration on Korea’s high-speed medium utility helicopter. In addition, Airbus and the Korean company will explore research and technology (R&T) projects that are aligned with their technical interests.

The two companies have maintained close ties in the defence and aerospace industries for the past 20 years, starting with their cooperation in the development of South Korea’s KUH-1 Surion helicopters.

“This expanded cooperation marks an important milestone in strengthening the competitiveness of Korea’s aerospace industry. Through a strategic partnership built on mutual trust, we aim to achieve sustainable growth and lead in future technologies”, Cha said.–-shp/adj/dl (Pix:AIRBUS)
