SOUTH Korea and Peru have signed a deal for the export of 54 K2 main battle tanks (MBT) and 141 K808 wheeled armoured personnel carriers (APC). Signed in Lima between Hyundai Rotem and the Peruvian Army, the signing was attended by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) chief Lee Yong-chul and Peruvian president Jose Jeri.

The framework agreement was signed but further details will be finalised once a follow-up deal is signed. Once implemented, the deal would be South Korea’s largest export of ground systems to Latin America.

Furthermore, Peru would be the first Latin American customer of the K2, which extends its reach beyond Europe since Poland ordered another 180 K2 MBTs and 81 other accompanying vehicles from Hyundai Rotem for US$6.5b.

Though no value was disclosed, the total is estimated to be worth over US$1.4 billion for the assets as well as plans for training and follow-up support.–-shp/adj/dl (Pix:ROKA)
