INDONESIA has confirmed its acquisition of BrahMos cruise missile, finalising the deal with India according to an Indonesian defence ministry statement. A spokesperson for the defence ministry had told reporters that a purchase had been finalised though more specifics were not disclosed.

“Indonesia has partnered with India in the procurement of the BrahMos missile system. This is part of our efforts to modernise our weaponry, especially in beefing up our coastal defence,” a statement quoted by Indonesian media. With the system that would “boost deterrence capabilities in safeguarding national sovereignty.”

Media reports reported that the Indonesia deal could be worth around US$200-350 million.

India’s BrahMos Aerospace was first in 1998 as a joint venture between India and Russia and has been in discussions with Indonesia on a possible purchase for the past few years, Indonesia is to be the second Southeast Asian nation to acquire the BrahMos after the Philippines. The Philippines acquired three batteries of the BrahMos in 2022, a contract valued at US$374M.
