BANGLADESH has signed a letter of intent (LOI) with Italian firm Leonardo for Eurofighter Typhoon fighter aircraft to modernise the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF). If finalised, the deal would be a major step forward in the country’s modernisation plans.

The LOI signing was held at the BAF’s headquarters in the presence of service chief Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan and Italy’s ambassador to Bangladesh Antonio Alessandro.

However, the deal is still in a preliminary stage with discussions set to begin and no details on how many units Bangladesh looks to acquire. Bangladesh was reported to be interested in acquiring 20 J-10C fighters from the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) with an estimated value of US$2.2 billion.

The Eurofighter Typhoon consortium is built on the strength of 4 European nations comprising the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Spain, and respective leading aerospace and defence companies–Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo.
