THAILAND’S Cabinet approved the appointment of army chief of staff General Chaipruak Doungprapat as the new secretary-general of the National Security Council (NSC). His appointment is part of a reshuffle which sees him replacing Chatchai Bangchuad who is now the permanent secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office.
The general has been said to be among the close associate of Thai prime minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who has described Gen Chaipruak as the “right man for the job.” Gen Chaipruak gained wide public attention during the Thai-Cambodian border conflict in late 2025, visiting soldiers injured in the clashes being treated in the hospital and affirmed Thailand’s readiness to protect its sovereignty. Furthermore, his response to violence in the southern border region also garnered attention, pledging to intensify proactive measures in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
Prior to his appointment as NSC secretary-general, he served as the Royal Thai Army’s (RTA) chief of staff while also serving as secretary-general of the Internal Security Operations Command.
