Airbus, LIG Defense & Aerospace Expand UAS Partnership

BUILDING on the framework established at Seoul ADEX last year, Airbus and LIG Defense & Aerospace (LIG D&A) have entered into a significantly expanded agreement aimed at pioneering next-generation technologies for uncrewed aerial systems (UAS). This new phase of partnership deepens the existing relationship between the two companies, pivoting toward technological integration and collaborative development to meet the rapidly evolving demands of the global defence market.

A key pillar of this enhanced cooperation is the comprehensive integration of advanced sensors and mission systems developed by LIG D&A onto the state-of-the-art UAS platforms designed by Airbus.

“This expanded agreement represents a pivotal milestone in Airbus’ relationship with LIG D&A as we move from high level alignment to deep technical and operation synergy. By embedding LIG D&A’s mission equipment and sensors onto our advanced UAS, and jointly exploring breakthrough innovations in artificial intelligence and extended endurance, we are positioning both companies to deliver future proof capabilities that will serve critical defence and security needs in Korea and across the global stage,” said Airbus Helicopters CEO Matthieu Louvot.

CEO of LIG D&A CEO Ick-Hyun Shin added, “This agreement marks a clear, shared vision to combine our cutting edge sensor and mission system technologies with Airbus’ next generation UAS platforms. By jointly developing AI driven sensor fusion and extended endurance capabilities, LIG D&A and Airbus will deliver future proof solutions that meet the evolving defence and security needs of Korea and the global market.”

Under this framework, engineering teams from both companies will collaborate to explore the integration of advanced mission payloads and solutions. This joint effort aims to enhance intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities, ultimately developing highly versatile and mission-capable aerial solutions to meet evolving defence requirements. 

Alongside hardware integration, the two parties are launching a joint technical study to identify synergies to enhance overall UAS performance. This research will explore advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, across uncrewed aerial vehicles and ground control stations to extend mission endurance and operational efficiency.
