Diehl Cicada Takes On Drones

HIGHLIGHTED at Diehl Defence’s booth in Bangkok, is the firm’s Cicada counter-UAS (unmanned aircraft system) eMissile interceptor. The Cicada is part of Diehl’s blueprint of offering all layers of aerial defences from very short-range all the way to extra-long range against the smallest of threats as well as the largest.

With the proliferation of drones and loitering munitions which pose threats in both peace-time and war, the electrically-propelled propeller-driven Cicada is a highly agile effector that can carry two different payloads for two types of threats. For kinetic engagements, the Cicada can carry a fragmentation warhead to destroy threats while a non-lethal warhead is also available in the form of a safety net to disable drones.

The Cicada is a modular, very cost-effective solution to reliably counter low-cost drones and drone swarms, guided to the target via data link and independent endgame through integrated seeker as well as pre-instruction using ground sensors.
