TWO of Fincantieri’s Multipurpose Combat Ships/Pattugliatore Polivalente d’Altura (MPCS/PPA) class offshore patrol vessels ordered by the Indonesian Navy have been officially renamed.

Taking place at the Italian shipbuilder’s Muggiano (La Spezia) shipyard on January 29, the ceremony saw the two vessels originally destined for the Italian Navy as Marcantonio Colonna and Ruggiero do Lauria renamed as KRI Brawijaya and KRI Prabu Siliwangi.

In attendance were chairman of Fincantieri Biaggio Mazzotta, Naval Vessels Division general manager Dario Deste, Indonesian Navy chief Admiral Muhammad Ali, the Italian Navy deputy chief Adm Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto, underscoring the strong defence collaboration between both nations.

A Fincantieri statement read, “This supply contract stems from the interest generated during the campaigns of the MPCS/PPA vessels Francesco Morosini and Raimondo Montecuccoli in Indonesia in 2023 and 2024, respectively. It marks a significant milestone in the strategic partnership between Fincantieri and the Indonesian Ministry of Defence.

Indonesia signed a US$1.3 billion deal for the two 143-metre long PPAs last March. The Brawijaya and Prabu Silliwangi are expected to be delivered to the Indonesian Navy this year, and will be the largest combat vessels in the Indonesian fleet.-shp/adj/dl (Pix:FINCANTIERI)
