THE United States and Philippines renewed the Communications Interoperability and Security Memorandum of Agreement (CISMOA) for another 15 years, strengthening interoperability, secure communications, and cooperation in critical defence domains.

The renewal took place during a meeting between the Philippines’ Secretary of National Defence and the US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue organised by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in Singapore.

A US Department of War statement read, “The two leaders discussed progress on operational cooperation and posture initiatives, including investments in critical infrastructure and storage facilities at strategic locations across the Philippines. They announced the signing of a new 15-year Communications Interoperability and Security Memorandum of Agreement (CISMOA) to streamline secure information sharing. The leaders also welcomed the successful conclusion of the 41st Exercise Balikatan, which included groundbreaking training in joint fires, coastal defence, and maritime security.”

The Philippines Department of National Defense (DND) stated that both sides were “reaffirming the enduring Philippines-US alliance as both countries mark the 75th anniversary of the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT).

A CISMOA is said to establish a standardised framework that amplifies operational compatibility among allied armed forces. Beyond enhancing interoperability, they ease the legal and bureaucratic impediments invariably associated with the acquisition and transfer of sensitive military technologies.–-shp/adj/dl (Pix:DND)
